Swearing with his hand on the Koran

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

I heard about this issue, but an email from the American Family Association really brought it home. If you like, you may read an excellent article on the subject and write to your representatives in Congress. Here is what I wrote to Representative Miller, Senator Martinez, and Senator Nelson:

It is an assault on the culture and moral foundation of this country that Keith Ellison, D-Minn. plans to take his oath of office on the Koran. What is more, this act furthers the ultimate goal of terrorists who would love to see Islam permeate the fabric of our society. Please take this matter very seriously and ensure that only the Bible is used for taking an oath of office. If necessary, introduce and pass legislation making the Bible the book to be used in swearing in Representatives, Senators, the President and Vice-President and other public officials.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you on this matter of importance to me and my family.

Bluster Against Blister Packs

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

I despise blister packs, or plastic clamshells as this article calls them. Yes, I’ve even cut myself with this dangerous stuff but, thankfully, haven’t ended up in the emergency room with the 6,400 people who went there with related injuries in 2004. It’s just a matter of time, though. I want an OpenX tool for Christmas!

Excerpt from Washington PostDo Not Pry Open Until Christmas

Consider a patent application, granted in 2003 to California-based One Source Industries, for a new and improved kind of clamshell:

“The backing and cover are preferably formed of a plastic . . . that is difficult to puncture, cut or tear,” it reads. “The seal between the backing and cover is preferably difficult to compromise, so that human hands have great difficulty separating the backing and cover.”

Then consider the patent granted a year later, to Thomas Perlmutter, for the brutally sharp OpenX tool, designed for clamshell-cracking. He’s put about a million into those frustrated human hands, and demand rises sharply around the holidays, he said. Another opener called KwikCut is sold in the Home Improvements catalogue.

Thank God it’s over for 2006!

New blog

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

What do you think of my WordPress blog? I’ve imported the posts from my Blogger blog, but that’s about it. That took all night! I need to fix the image links and spruce things up, but here it is!

Lensbaby

Lensbaby

As I was reading PC World last night, I came across an interesting column. It’s about the Lensbaby variable focus lens. You move it around with your fingertips to bring just one area of the frame into focus. Way cool!

Sadly, the lens is made for an SLR camera, and my faithful film SLR has rested in its coffin-like case since the last wedding I shot more than a year ago. If I ever shoot another wedding, I’ll buy a digital SLR first. Until then, or at least for a while longer, I’ll have to be content with my pro-summer digital camera.

Hey, if some one wants to buy this for me, it’s cool enough that it would make a great paper weight for my desk! That’d be rather pricey for a paperweight, though.

Oatmeal from above

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

This morning I showed up for work in time to watch maintenance workers finish replacing a few ceiling tiles in my office ceiling.

The real excitement started yesterday. Too bad I don’t have a camera phone! Actually it was Tuesday evening as I was leaving work late, that I drop of water fell on me. I looked up to see a wet spot in my office ceiling. This is the same spot that dripped some time ago because of an air conditioner leak in computer room above. Some one should know, I thought, so I called the tech guy who had taken care of the problem last time. He wasn’t home, so I left a message. How much condensation could come off of an air conditioner in one night? Not much, I figured. It would just drip all night. I placed my trash can under the offending spot and left. (more…)

Esther Joy’s first steps

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

On Monday, Esther Joy took three steps on her own! It seems the experience took her by surprise, and she isn’t doing much to repeat her feat. Carolyn called me on my cell phone to tell me about it. In no time, we’ll have another little one running around!

Here’s a picture of Esther Joy in September. She’s standing up, ready to dig into a box full of baby food. Yum!

Survey from Bill Frist

I took a couple minutes to complete this survey from Bill First’s group. Perhaps it did some good. It made me feel a little better, at least!

Remembering the fallen, recognizing the victories

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

On Veteran’s Day, Kim Komando sent this link in her cool site of the day newsletter. I clicked on the first name, Sgt. 1st Class Brent A. Adams, and was touched.

While walking back from the bank today, it struck me that remembering the fallen is important; but it is also important to remember the living and the victories they are achieving in Iraq right now. A site of this same caliber should be dedicated to celebrating the daily victories our troops are achieving. I think that if these advances were touted to the same extent that our military’s scarifies are, the American public would be compelled to support their effort.

After a tour in Iraq, our friend, Keelan, stopped by for a visit this summer. He opened his laptop and showed us picture after picture of the troops he led and the things they did. He showed us large weapons cashes that were blown up with amazing fireworks. He showed us IED’s that were found and destroyed. There were also pictures of Iraqis and stories of how they cooperated with the military to defeat terrorists.

How about a site that celebrates these things? Perhaps it would help turn the tide of public opinion that is skewed by the liberal media.
