FDA Warns Consumers Not to Eat Certain Jars of Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter
The Food and Drug Administration FDA is warning consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee a bacterium that causes foodborne illness. The affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number “2111.” Both the Peter Pan and Great Value brands are manufactured in a single facility in Georgia by ConAgra. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected. If consumers have any of this Peter Pan or Great Value brand peanut butter in their home that has been purchased since May 2006, they should discard it.
For the first time that I can remember, my family is involved in a product recall. Oh boy, oh boy!
Yup. We have a scarcely-touched jar of Great Value peanut buttter with “2111″ on the lid. According to the ConAgra press release, none of their tests have indicated the presense of Salmonella in their peanut butter. Who do I believe? The FDA, who is just trying to protect me and is obviously infallable, or ConAgra — a giant corporation obsessed with profits regardless of health risks to consumers? Hmmm. Is this the same FDA that says not to eat cookie dough because of possible Salmonella poisoning from raw eggs? I don’t follow that sage advice. Licking beaters is a sacred rite of cookie making!
Well, I suppose we’ll toss the jar of creamed goobers, but mailing the lid to ConAgra for a refund sounds like too much hassel. Perhaps Wal-Mart will refund our money. They take anything back!
