October in September

Friday, September 28th, 2007

I’m an uncle again! My brother joins me the in the father-of-two-boys-and-one-girl club. His first daughter, October, was born just this morning. At 7 pounds, 11.6 ounces, and 20.5 inches she seems to be quite healthy! Carolyn’s sister has two daughters, but somehow it feels special to have “my own” niece, now. Paul should post more details on his blog once he gets out of the hospital, but I couldn’t wait to break the news.

Drive safely

Drive safelyCarolyn usually says goodbye when I leave for work with the words, “drive safely.” Andrew has picked up the phrase and uses it as a mantra to the extent that I wonder whether I might be going to work as a crash dummy!

Today, after a “drive safely” admonition, Andrew reminded me that I should ask a policeman if I have any questions. Also, he assured me, a tow truck would tow my car away should I happen to get into an accident.

Children can be rather challenging to photograph. When I squatted down to get a better angle, Esther Joy thought it would be a good idea to copy me.

HSLDA | School District Tells Homeschooler She’s Learning Too Fast

The Gilbert (name changed to protect privacy) family’s daughter, due to extenuating circumstances, was behind one grade in school. The following year, to correct this, the daughter worked doubly hard and completed two grades in one year!

At the end of the year, Mrs. Gilbert submitted two assessments so that her daughter could advance to the correct grade and be back on track with her peers. The evaluation was exactly as it should be, and the family was encouraged by their daughter’s determination to make up for lost time.

Unfortunately, the Gilberts were distressed when they received a response from the Escambia County School District to the evaluations sent. The letter stated that the district was unable to accept two year-end evaluations for a homeschool student in one year, and that they would not promote the student to the 10th grade, regardless of the fact that the 10th grade evaluation was already submitted.

NOAA infrared Atlantic 1

Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook
A WEAK SURFACE LOW PRESSURE AREA AND AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW NEAR THE FLORIDA PENINSULA ARE PRODUCING A LARGE AREA OF DISTURBED WEATHER OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC…PORTIONS OF THE BAHAMAS…AND PORTIONS OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA. SURFACE PRESSURES ARE SLOWLY FALLING… AND A SUBTROPICAL OR A TROPICAL CYCLONE COULD FORM OVER THE NEXT DAY OR TWO AS THE DISTURBANCE MOVES WESTWARD ACROSS FLORIDA AND INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO.

I don’t like this, no, not one little bit! My layman’s opinion is that this is Jerry in utero. When the wave reaches the Gulf, it will feed on the warm water and become a hurricane. The trouble with hurricanes in the Gulf is that they run into land sooner or later!

Powers reserved to the states

Bill of Rights

U.S. Constitution Amendment X
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved for the States respectively, or to the people.

Fred the Federalist - September 17, 2007 - The New York Sun
One of the most intriguing aspects of the current contest for the Republican Party’s nomination for president is the emphasis being placed on the principle of federalism, the idea that the people delegated to the federal government only certain enumerated powers and that most decisions are best left to the local and state governments. Senator Thompson is the candidate who has picked up the mantle of federalism; he has gone so far as to make a brief discussion of federalism a regular feature of his stump speech. “Power is separated not only at the federal level, but between the federal and the state level,” Mr. Thompson said at a recent stop in Iowa. “And not every solution to every problem has a federal solution, under the Constitution of the United States.”

Flag and 9-11 WTC memorial lights

The greatest testament to God’s protection, our nation’s effective leadership, and our troops’ selfless sacrifice is that a similar tragedy has not visited us again these last six years.

God’s been good

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Has it been nearly a month since my last post? Ah, well. Things have been rather crazy since Isaac came along. Of course, that was about three months ago; so I’d better get with the program or find a new excuse. My experience is that adjusting to a new baby takes about three months. Now it’s time to regain a “normal” routine!

One of the specials that was sung in church a few times recently is the song, “God’s Been Good.” I’m not sure who wrote it, and I can’t find the lyrics online. The Thompsons sing it, and you can listen to a quick clip here. Anyway, it’s been going through my head a lot lately. I am impressed by the great blessing of God in my life — a beautiful family with three children, health, a steady job, a nice house, two cars, and my needs and most wants satisfied. There are so many around me facing serious needs or terrible sickness, but God is taking such great care of me. I don’t understand it; but I pray I will never forget to praise God for it!
